Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Fifteen graduates of Valencia’s Take Stock in Children program were among those presented with college scholarships by Aio Wireless, a subsidiary of AT&T. The “30 Days, 30 Dreams” scholarship recipients were honored on June 4 at a reception at the Orlando Museum of Art.

Scholarship recipients each received a $1,000 scholarship and a ZTE Velox tablet. The 15 Orange County Take Stock in Children-Valencia graduates and their high schools are as follows:

Edgewater High School: Katie Frangoul, Kisheera Victrum, Tyra Robinson and Desirae Hall

Evans High School: Tanisha Marshall

Jones High School: Turquoisia McNabb and Breanna Cummings

Boone High School: Shaunique Robbins, Ayea Atiya and Justice Donald

Wekiva High School: Ona Jericho, Cristian Rivera, Chelsea Spieckermann and Leanna McAlpin

Winter Park High School: Cassandra King

Aio Wireless began operations on May 9 in Orlando, Tampa and Houston, and plans to expand nationwide over the next year.

Valencia administers Take Stock in Children—a statewide program—in the Orlando area in collaboration with Orange County Public Schools. Valencia’s Take Stock In Children program pairs community leader mentors with students starting in the 8th grade. Students who maintain good grades, remain crime and drug free, and meet with their mentors are awarded a 2+2 Florida Prepaid scholarship upon graduating from high school. Students can attend a two-year community college and state university of their choice.
