Statement from Governor Rick Scott Congratulating Florida Community Colleges for
Winning National Recognition

Tallahassee, Fla. – “I want to congratulate Valencia College for winning the first-ever Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Valencia College President Dr. Sanford Shugart, faculty, staff and board of trustees members, who have been able to deliver exceptional results by helping students succeed in learning, graduating and securing well-paying jobs. Valencia and the surrounding Central Florida community have proven that with a focused vision of community collaboration, creative thinking and dedicated resources, they are able to build successful outcomes for all students.

“I also want to congratulate Miami-Dade College for being named a finalist with distinction.  Our Florida College system is renowned for its excellence, and I am pleased to share that 14 of the 28 colleges in the Florida College System were in the top 10 percent in the Aspen competition. This national recognition confirms the academic excellence of our state’s postsecondary institutions, and I applaud the efforts of our higher education community for providing a valuable resource for the continued sustainability of Florida’s future.”
