Peace & Justice Institute Holds Workshop to Heal Sanford’s Wounds

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

After the Trayvon Martin shooting and the trial of George Zimmerman, the city of Sanford, Fla., has become the epicenter of discussions about race relations in the United States.

Given the contentious relationship between Sanford’s African-American community and the city’s police department, Valencia College’s Peace & Justice Institute hosted a workshop on Aug. 19, inviting members of the police force, the African-American community and area leaders to discuss their conflicts and how to resolve them.

The Orlando Sentinel covered the event, which was organized by Valencia criminal justice professor Dr. James McDonald. More than 50 police officers, pastors, members of the African-American community and others attended the workshop.
