Fall Opera Theatre Workshop

Valencia College will present the music department’s Opera Theatre Workshop on Dec. 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theater on East Campus.

This year’s concert features the 20th-century opera, “Gallantry,” a one-act parody of a soap opera. Set in a hospital, it’s a melodramatic story of love and lust, featuring a love-obsessed surgeon, a beautiful nurse and an unsuspecting patient (who happens to be engaged to the nurse.)

The second half of the evening will feature scenes and songs from three Broadway Classics, including Disney’s “Newsies”, the story of a bunch of tough kids from the streets of New York, selling newspapers, who dared to stand up to two of the most powerful men in America.

The concert will also feature scenes from the Tony award-winning musical “Avenue Q” — a jaw-dropping, side-splitting look at life after college. Set in a world where puppets and humans live on the same “street,” it’s like an R-rated version of everyone’s favorite childhood TV show.

And stick around for songs from “Closer than Ever,” which features songs dealing with such topics as security, aging, mid-life crises, second marriages, working couples, friendship and unrequited love.

The Opera Theatre Workshop concert is free and open to the public. However, adult content is featured throughout the show and may not be appropriate for young children.

The Black Box Theater is located in Bldg. 3, on Valencia’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando.
