Valencia Opens Theater Season with “Urinetown, the Musical”

Valencia College Theater will present the Tony Award-winning musical, “Urinetown, the Musical,” as the opening production of its 2012-13 theater season.

The satirical musical, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollman and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, opens on Friday, Oct. 19. Additional performances will be held on Oct. 20 and 21, and Oct. 25-28. The curtain will rise at 7:30 p.m. for performances Thursdays through Saturdays. Sunday performances will begin at 2 p.m.

The performance on Saturday, Oct. 27, will be interpreted in American Sign Language and a special section of seating will be reserved for hearing-impaired guests.

In “Urinetown, the Musical,” a 20-year drought has caused dramatic water shortages and the government has banned private toilets. Instead, citizens are forced to pay to pee in public “amenities” controlled by the Urine Good Company and its greedy CEO. People caught peeing in bottles or bushes suffer the harshest punishments, and the poor (the 99 percent) finally stage a revolution! This Tony-Award winning musical is smart, silly and relevant.

“Urinetown, the Musical” will be directed by Valencia Artistic Director Julia Allardice Gagne, with musical direction by Tim Hanes and choreography by Lesley Brasseux Rodgers.

The play will be presented in the Performing Arts Center at Valencia College’s East Campus, located at 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando.

Ticket prices are $15 for general admission; tickets are $12 for students, senior citizens, Valencia stuff and alumni.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.valenciacollege.edu/arts or by calling the box office at 407-582-2900. Tickets for the special section for the hearing-impaired may be purchased through the box office. Please purchase your tickets in advance.
