Valencia Gay-Straight Alliance, PJI Partner to Bring Award-Winning LGBTQ Documentary to East Campus

Orlando, FL — In the wake of the Pulse nightclub tragedy, LGBTQ+ Latinx leaders of the local community organization QLatinx, in partnership with Valencia College’s Peace and Justice Institute, will show Marco Castro-Bojorquez’s award-winning documentary, “El Canto Del Colibri.”

The first film of its kind, the groundbreaking documentary features Latino immigrant fathers discussing acceptance of their LGBTQ children. The documentary has played at over 30 international film festivals, including screenings in Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, and throughout the United States – and last month wrapped up its major festival tour at Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival.

el-canto-del-colibri-2The film was one of several selected as “Best Documentary Audience Choice Award” at the CinHomo Muestra de Cine LGBT Valladolid, Spain, and Best Documentary by the Jury at l Can [be] Gay: 3º Festival Internacional de Cine LGBTIQ de Canarias, Spain

Directed by Castro-Bojorquez, a longtime activist, community educator and honoree of the White House’s Champions of Change Program, the 53-minute documentary delves deeply into issues of immigration, prejudice and isolation. The film was created directly within the queer and Latinx communities, including San Francisco community partners Somos Familia and BAYCAT Productions, as well as Lambda Legal and Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement.el-canto-del-colibri-3

The film will be shown at the Valencia College, East Campus in Building 8, Room 101 on Wed., Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

This event is a partnership between QLatinx, the Peace and Justice Institute, the Valencia East Gay Straight Alliance.
