Valencia College Celebrates Black History Month

From courageous conversations to performances by internationally acclaimed artists, a series of events across Valencia College’s campuses will be held throughout February to commemorate and highlight Black History Month.

One of the first events during the month long celebration is the “Minority Male Symposium: Courageous Conversations.” This event emphasizes a desire to change the narrative around complex conversations and how to connect with others and reveal the truth in the world around us. Held onTuesday, Feb. 11 on West Campus in HSB 105, we will also dive into a reality check on our emotions, feelings and mental health from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Four scholarships will also be awarded to students who attend and enter a drawing to win.

Events continue in the second week of February with the Black American Excellence Day as We The Culture presents a Black History Month and Valentine’s Day themed event. Students are welcome to come learn about black culture and the art of self-love. This event will take place on West Campus on the SSB Patio from 12–3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.

We will also close out the month with two powerhouse performances. First, join Valencia College at the Lake Nona Campus in Building 1, Room 148 for the internationally and nationally acclaimed African Folklore performing arts initiative OrisiRisi. Through song, drumming, folktales and dance we will explore the rich history, culture, and traditions of Africa. Their performance will be on Thursday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The final event in honor of Black History Month will be performed by the Symphonic Band. Their Spring Symphonic Concert will feature some of music’s most significant African American composers, including William Grant Still, Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington. This tribute to African American artists takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 25, on East Campus’ Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.
