Symphonic Band to Perform International Music, Collect Spoons for Haiti

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

ORLANDO – Around the world in 80 days? Why not go around the world in one evening – with a concert that will take listeners from Europe to Asia and to the Caribbean?

Valencia College’s Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensemble will present a concert of international music on Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on Valencia’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando.

The student musicians will take listeners on a musical journey around the world, with selections including “Russian Sailors’ Dance” by Reinhold Gliere, “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Banes Chance, “The Slavonic Dances, a Symphonic Suite” by Antonin Dvorak and “Fantasia Espanol” by John Higgins.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information about the concert, please call 407-582-2498.

Guests and audience members are asked to bring a metal teaspoon or tablespoon to contribute to a “spoon drive” for Haiti.

spoons for haitiNew Missions, an Orlando-based charity, feeds hundreds of Haitian children at mission schools every day. To teach them basic hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases, the missionaries require the children to wash their hands before the meal. When possible, they also give the children a spoon to keep – as a reward and a demonstration of a more sanitary method of eating. Because most Haitian children eat with their hands, the spoons become a prized possession and they wash both their hands and their spoons before a meal.
