Orlando, FL – Dr. James May, who teaches English as a Second Language at Valencia College, has been named one of the Top 40 Innovators in Education by the Center for Digital Education (CDE).
The Center for Digital Education is a national research and advisory institute specializing in K-12 and higher education technology trends, policy and funding. Each year, the center highlights 40 educators who are on the cutting edge of innovation.
May is the faculty fellow for innovation and technology at Valencia College, where he has pioneered the use of cell phones and computer-assisted learning in his English as a Second Language classes.
“His success stems from pushing boundaries and engaging both faculty and students through various technologies and innovative digital and communications strategies,” the team at CDE said.

In 2011, May was selected as the CASE/Carnegie Foundation’s Florida Professor of the Year. In 2012, he won the Sloan Consortium Effective Practice Award for his presentation, “Cellphones in the Classroom: Collaborative or Calamitous?”
He is currently the president of Florida’s Organization for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. He is also one of the creators of Circles of Innovation (circlesofinnovation.org), an open-source faculty development resource at Valencia College.
May got his start in the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in the 1990s, when he served as a linguist for the U.S. Army.
