Valencia’s West Campus to Hold Emergency Preparedness Exercise

Orlando – More than a hundred Central Florida first responders and emergency personnel will practice a full-scale emergency preparedness exercise on Valencia College’s West Campus on Friday, July 10, 2015, from 3 to 7 p.m.

The exercise, titled Operation VIPER (Valencia Interoperable Partnership in Emergency Response), will include high-risk incidents and is designed to test the effectiveness of emergency agencies’ communications and response times during disasters. A dozen agencies are participating in the exercise, including Valencia’s security staff, Orlando Police Department, Orlando Fire Department,Orange County Fire Rescue, the City of Orlando Office of Emergency Management, UCF’s Office of Emergency Management and the MetroWest Master Association.

Emergency responders will use information gathered from the exercise to improve and refine the procedures they use in crisis scenarios.

The exercise will run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Valencia’s West Campus, located at 1800 W. Kirkman Road, Orlando. Much of the college will be closed starting at noon, but Buildings 10 and 11 will remain open for classes and will not be impacted. Students attending classes in those buildings should use Parking Lot G and enter the campus via the north Kirkman Drive entrance or the Resource Avenue entrance.
