Valencia Exhibit to Showcase Art by Mississippi Native Rob Reedy

ORLANDO – Valencia College is hosting an exhibition of artwork by Mississippi-born artist Robert Reedy Jan. 18 through March 1 at Valencia College’s East Campus, in the Anita S. Wooten Gallery.

To kick off the exhibition, “Doodah Dada: Works by Robert Reedy,” Valencia will host a reception for Reedy on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery. Reedy will talk about his artwork at 6 p.m.

The exhibition showcases paintings, drawings and sculptures by Reedy, who is currently a visual arts professor at the University of Central Florida.

Reedy’s childhood took place in rural Mississippi where he was surrounded by “traditions of family, storytelling, and faith.” These traditions and experiences have shaped him and his relationship to the work.

“Growth as an artist is directly related to the acceptance of one’s self as an individual who dresses, talks, visualizes and creates differently from any other human. I see it as a refreshing force in a world that can sometimes be cold, static and impersonal. My philosophy is an interesting balance between intellect and superstition, science and magic, New York and Mississippi — a sort of Doo Dah Dada,” says Reedy.

Reedy earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Mississippi. His work has been displayed at The American Crafts Museum in New York, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the American Museum of Ceramic Art, in Pomona, Calif.

The Anita S. Wooten Gallery is located in Building 3, room 112, on Valencia’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando.

Admission to the gallery is free. The opening night reception is free and open to the public.

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, please call 407-582-2298 or 407-582-2268.
