Valencia Theatre to Present Hilarious, Historical ‘This One’s for the Girls’

Orlando, FL – Valencia College Theatre is proud to present the off-Broadway hit musical, “This One’s for the Girls,” a high-energy, historical and hysterical look at women’s changes from 1900 to today, as illustrated by popular song. The show opens on June 7 and runs through June 16.

Written by former Vanderbilt University professor, author and playwright Dorothy Marcic, “This One’s for the Girls” carries the audience from the co-dependence of “I Will Follow Him” to the anger of “These Boots are Made for Walking,” to the cynicism of “What’s Love Got to Do with it,” and finally to the strength of “Hero.” Combining excerpts of 63 songs with women’s own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce and gaining independence, the show has been described as “a high-energy celebration of American women.”

Interwoven between the music are monologues—real women’s stories, which bring clarity and meaning to the songs. The show grew out of Marcic’s research and subsequent book (published in 2002) on women’s Top 40 songs, which showed how women are portrayed differently in each era. Marcic’s theatrical work, originally titled “Respect: A Musical Journey of Women,” was later developed into the current musical theater production and Valencia College is producing it with direct permission from Marcic.

The production will be directed by John DiDonna, chair of Valencia College’s theater program (who worked with Marcic on former productions of “Respect” and other original works), with musical direction by Patti Sayers and original choreography by Dion Leonhard DiDonna.

Don’t miss this incredible journey through song, featuring actresses Daniela Cordero, Alyssa Dowling, Saige Love and Mary Grace Meyer.

** There will be a talk-back with the cast and crew on Friday, June 14, following the production. In addition, American Sign Language interpretation will be available at the performance on Saturday, June 15.
