To kick off the academic year and the fall arts season, the Anita S. Wooten Gallery at Valencia College will host a graphic-design exhibit featuring the work of some of Orlando’s best graphic designers.
The exhibition, “Graphic by Design,” will open Aug. 19 and run through Sept. 30. The gallery will host a reception on Friday, Sept. 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with refreshments. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
“Graphic by Design” includes work by award-winning Orlando artists Steve Carsella, André Greppi, Bryan Kriekard, Julio Lima, Tom Macaluso, Jeff Matz and Thomas Scott.
Allan Maxwell, an adjunct instructor of photography at Valencia College, curated the exhibit. “I’ve always felt that the best of design and fine art overlap through the concepts of the elements and principles of design,” Maxwell said. “The beauty and structure of good design can be seen in the work of these professional graphic designers from Orlando.”
Although the gallery’s exhibits are usually curated by the gallery director, Jackie Otto-Miller, she asked Maxwell to assemble this exhibit. He, along with graphic design professor Kristy Pennino, selected the artists whose work is featured.
“Allan has a hand on the pulse of graphic arts in this town,” Otto-Miller said, “and he picked local artists who he thought were representative of what’s going on.”
The gallery is located at Valencia’s East Campus, at 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The gallery is named for Wooten, a Valencia art instructor who died in 2001, after a 10-year battle with cancer. The Anita S. Wooten Gallery is a teaching gallery dedicated to enhancing student understanding and appreciation of art and providing both students and the community exposure to a diverse agenda of visual art forms from regional artists.
