Orlando, FL – Valencia College’s music department is pleased to announce its lineup for the fall arts season, with a series of three free concerts. The concerts will feature a wide variety of works, ranging from a tribute to the music of Freddie Mercury and the rock band, Queen, to songs from musicals including Rent, Legally Blonde and the wildly popular viral video, A Very Potter Musical.
Fall String Ensemble Concert:
Valencia’s String Ensemble will perform a free concert on Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The program’s featured work is the exciting “Capriccio Espagnol” by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. Other works on the program include: excerpts from Henry Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas; “The Music Of The Night” from The Phantom Of The Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber; “The 3-Minute Nutcracker,” a medley of Nutcracker themes music by Tchaikovsky, arranged by Lloyd Conley; and Jacques Offenbach’s rousing “Can-Can,” as well as solos by members of the ensemble.
The program will be held in the Building 3 atrium at Valencia College’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando.
“Oh, What a Night!”
Valencia Contemporary Ensemble will present its Winter Concert, “Oh, What a Night!” on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The high-energy group will sing and dance through a medley of songs from the shows “Jersey Boys” and “Sister Act,” plus a tribute to Freddie Mercury and Queen. The singers will turn their attention to songs of the holiday season, including “Where Are You Christmas?” from How The Grinch Stole Christmas and “Christmas Time is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas.
The concert will also include performances by the Valencia Singers, including holiday songs, plus excerpts from the opera, Dido and Aeneas, “The Gondoliers: by Rossini, and the famous “Alto Rhapsody, Opus 53,” featuring voice faculty Johanna Nordhorn.
The free concert will be held at the Performing Arts Center on Valencia College’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail.
Freak Flag
Valencia’s Opera Theatre Workshop will present Freak Flag Dec. 9-10 at 7:30 p.m. in Valencia’s Black Box Theater. The first half of the program is a performance of the opera, Dido and Aeneas, featuring guest artist Cheryse McLeod-Lewis in the title role of Dido, Queen of Carthage. Valencia’s String Ensemble accompanies the production, and members of Valencia Singers comprise the chorus.
The second act, featuring all musical theater numbers, starts with an invitation to “Get Back To Hogwarts” from A Very Potter Musical, and is followed by scenes from Dreamgirls, Legally Blonde, La Cage Aux Folles, Company, Memphis, and Rent. Some material may not be appropriate for young children.
The program is free and seating is limited, so please arrive early. Valencia’s Black Box Theater is located inside Building 3 at Valencia College’s East Campus, 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail.
