Sonja Boles-Melvin was honored with the 2011 Excellence in Education award during the Black History Committee of Orange County (BHCOC) Presidential Gala held on Feb. 19 at the Rosen Centre. The BHCOC recognizes individuals in the areas of community service, education and humanitarian contributions. Attending the event were many elected officials including Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings, Orlando Police Chief Val Demings, Florida Representative and former Valencia administrator Geraldine Thompson and other dignitaries. The president of BHCOC is Deloris Batson who is a member of the Valencia Community College Black Advisory Committee.
Boles-Melvin is the collegewide assistant director of Admissions and Records and a professor in the Student Success Department teaching a Student Life Skills course.
