Valencia College Theater continues a 2018-2019 season rich with quirky, irreverent and experimental productions as it stages the off-Broadway hit, “Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play.”
Anne Washburn’s dark comedy propels the audience forward 75 years, when a group of performers band together in the wake of a global cataclysm and pass the time recounting a 1994 episode of “The Simpsons.” Attempting to piece together the episode entitled “Cape Feare,” the survivors explore how pop culture evolves from one era to the next, zeroing in on three different time periods as an old tale becomes a new American myth.
The play first premiered in 2012, and its off-Broadway run played at Playwrights Horizons in 2013. A New York Times “Critic’s Pick,” “Mr. Burns” garnered praise for its “depth of feeling” and “breadth of imagination,” leaving viewers “both exhausted and exhilarated from all the layers of time and thought” through which the play travels. The Valencia College production will be directed by Jeremy Seghers, and staged in the intimate Black Box Theater on the college’s East Campus.
