Orlando, FL – Valencia College Theater presents the madcap, outer-space musical, “Return to the Forbidden Planet,” for four shows, starting Oct. 17.
“Return to the Forbidden Planet” is a jukebox musical based on the 1956 science fiction film “Forbidden Planet,” which, in turn, is loosely based on Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest.” The show features a score of 1950s and 1960s rock-and-roll classics and dialogue adapted from well-known passages from Shakespeare.
Often billed as “Shakespeare’s forgotten rock and roll masterpiece”, the musical has been performed all over the world since its premiere in London in the 1980s. It won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical for both 1989 and 1990.
London’s Daily Mail newspaper called the musical “tacky, camp, irreverent and – frankly enjoyable… A cult hit.”
The musical opens on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m., with additional performances on Oct. 18 and 19, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 20.
The play will be staged at Valencia College’s Performing Arts Center, located on the college’s East Campus, located at 701 N. Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando.
Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for students, seniors, Valencia staff and alumni; and $7 for children 12 years old and under.
