Valencia College Theater Presents West End version of Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein’

NOTE: Due to the college closure for Hurricane Ian, the dates for the production of “Young Frankenstein” have changed.

Orlando, FL – Valencia College theater department will present Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” (West End Version) at the college’s East Campus Performing Arts Center starting Oct. 21.

The Tony-nominated “Young Frankenstein” opened in New York’s  Hilton Theatre in October 2007 and played a total of 485 performances. The musical was based on Brooks’ 1974 comedy film, which starred Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman and Madeline Kahn. Using Mary Shelley’s famed novel as inspiration, the show uses farce and comedy to tell the story of Baron Frankenstein’s grandson, who aims to fulfill his grandfather’s legacy by bringing a corpse back to life.

Brooks wrote a new version of the play, which was staged in London’s West End theater district in 2017. The new version includes new songs and was reworked for more intimate theaters and stages.

The production will be directed by Rebekah Lane of Valencia College’s School of Arts and Entertainment.

The Valencia College theater department planned to stage the play in 2019 but was delayed by the COVID pandemic. After three years of planning, the show will finally make it to the East Campus stage – and the cast will include Natalie Doliner, a professional actress who will play Frau Blucher. Doliner last performed at Valencia College as Mama Morton in the college’s production of “Chicago.”

Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for students, faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens. To buy tickets, please visit valenciacollege.edu/arts or call the box office at 407-582-2900.

[Editor’s note: Because Valencia College closed for six days due to Hurricane Ian, the college’s production of Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” (West End Version) will have only three performances — Oct. 21, 22 and 23.

The college closure forced the theater department to cancel rehearsals and the set and costume teams lost six days of preparation. In addition, the arrival of some supplies was delayed.

If you have already purchased tickets for shows originally scheduled for Oct. 14-16, please check your e-mail and contact the box office at 407-582-2900.]
