As required by Florida law, Valencia College is providing public notice and notifying currently enrolled students of proposed fee increases before consideration by the college’s District Board of Trustees. At its meeting scheduled for June 26, the college’s trustees will consider the adoption of a distance-learning fee, as authorized by law, and proposed increases in lab fees. The proposed distance learning fee would be applicable to courses delivered online for the 2019-2020 academic year.
It is important to note that, for the sixth consecutive year, Valencia College will not recommend or adopt any increase in tuition and out-of-state fees.
Due to the increasing resources needed to effectively address the student demand for online learning, Valencia College will propose the adoption of a distance-learning course user fee of $8 per credit hour, applicable only to courses delivered online. The amount of the fee does not exceed the additional costs of the services provided, which are attributable to the development and delivery of distance learning courses. It is important to note that more than 20 Florida College System institutions have already adopted and charge a distance learning course user fee — and, if adopted by the board of trustees as proposed, Valencia’s fee would be one of the lowest such fees in the Florida College System.
Valencia’s student demand and enrollment for online courses has grown tremendously over the last five years, and the adoption of this fee will enhance and maintain infrastructure that Valencia needs to meet student demand and support this growth.
In addition, the college will propose increases in existing lab fees or the adoption of new lab fees for 422 courses, to cover but not exceed the actual costs of the services and materials provided to students.
