ORLANDO – Valencia College’s School of the Arts & Entertainment has a busy month of April in store as it brings multiple genres and art forms to the stage in a lively series of free performances.
On April 3, Valencia’s Fifth Annual Live Music and Live Art event, themed “Made in America,” invites student visual artists to perform alongside student musicians. With easels in hand, they will have 60 minutes to create visual masterpieces as the Symphonic Band, Brass and String Ensembles perform American classics from Aaron Copland, John Philip Sousa, Leroy Anderson, Stephen Foster, Eric Whitacre and more. On April 10, the Spring Choral concert tasks the Valencia Singers with multiple performances including Mozart’s “Regina Coeli” and “Laudate Dominum,” “Three Native American Settings” by Kevin Memley, and “Good Night, Dear Heart” by Dan Forrest. Soloists will include students from the current ensemble as well as special guest alumni.
The second half of the choral program features the Contemporary Ensemble performing musical theater selections from “Dreamgirls,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Shrek: The Musical,” “The Adams Family,” “The Wild Party,” “Footloose,” “All Shook Up,” “The Greatest Showman” and “The Secret Garden.” http://events.valenciacollege.edu/event/spring_choral_concert
For the weekend of April 20 and 21, the Spring Opera Theater Workshop brings the iconic work of Mozart into the Black Box theater with an English reproduction of “Cosi Fan Tutte,” wherein two men wager on the fidelity of their respective relationships. Modern themes of social anxiety and paralyzing insecurity then take the stage in the form of Tony Award-winning, “Dear Evan Hansen.”
The evening rounds out with the jazz-filled score of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” as the main character J. Peirrepont Finch climbs the corporate ladder with the aid of a self-help book, all while compromising the relationship with his love interest, Rosemary. Other free music events this month include Valencia’s Spring Jazz Concert on Thursday, April 5 and the Valencia House Band concert on Thursday, April 12, both of which will take place from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the East Campus Performing Arts Center.
