Valencia’s Osceola Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a spectacular “Color Run” event on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to build awareness about its efforts to support legislation that would allow undocumented students who graduated from a Florida high school, after attending the high school for at least three years, to pay in-district tuition rates at state colleges and universities.
Osceola Campus President Kathleen Plinske said that a significant number of students in Osceola County cannot afford to attend college, or are only able to afford to take one course each semester, given that state law currently requires Valencia to charge out-of-state tuition rates to undocumented students. Efforts to change the policy have gained momentum among Florida legislators, and members of the SGA plan to travel to Tallahassee to lobby for the change.
