Valencia College Begins Search for Next President

Valencia College is launching a national search to find a successor for President Sandy Shugart, who will retire at the end of June after 20 years of distinguished service. The college’s District Board of Trustees will be looking for an experienced and innovative leader in higher education with at least 10 years of senior leadership experience in higher education and an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D.

Washington, D.C.-based AGB Search will consult in the recruitment process. AGB Search specializes in executive searches for higher education institutions.

A 19-member Presidential Search Committee, representing trustees, faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni and community leaders, has been appointed and charged by Valencia’s District Board of Trustees with identifying finalists for the board to consider. In a meeting yesterday, the board approved the committee’s recommended position profile and process for the discernment and selection of qualified candidates. Over the next two months, the Presidential Search Committee will review application materials, select semi-finalists for interview and present an unranked list of finalists for the board’s consideration.

The college community, as well as the public, will have an opportunity to hear from the semi-finalists and finalists, once the trustees have approved the recommendations received from the Presidential Search Committee.

For information on the candidates, search process and other details, visit the Presidential Search webpage. The deadline to apply for the position of president is October 22 at 8 p.m. EDT.

Valencia’s board plans to select the new president in December. The incoming president will transition to the college in the spring and work closely with Dr. Shugart until his retirement later in the summer.
